Rugby Championship & 2018 Mitre 10 Cup round 2 review

Well, the All Blacks (Who were celebrating Owen Franks in his 100th test match) have retained of course the Bledisloe Cup for another year with star first five-eighth for the AB's, Beauden Barrett scoring an record equaling 4 tries in the test match so here's the full match commentary taken from Newshub:

7:20pm: Welcome to part two of tonight's double-header! Can the All Blacks follow the Black Ferns' lead and topple the Aussies? We'll find out in about 80 minutes.

7:25pm: So news is Sam Cane is playing tonight. He was in doubt after sitting out yesterday's captain's run.

7:28pm: Hooper leads out the Wallabies onto Eden Park. Australia have gone with a new propping pair to fix last week's scrum woes. And at the forefront of their troubles was Owen Franks. The All Blacks tighthead leads out the team in his 100th test.

7:30pm: Time for the anthems. Australia 'Advance Australia Fair' first up.

7:32pm: New Zealand anthem now up. Vince Harder performing 'God Defend New Zealand' with the crowd in full voice.

7:34pm: Now, time for the haka. Last item on the agenda before kick-off. Perenara leading the Kapa 'O Pango.

7:35pm: We're just about underway. It's Australia kicking-off, New Zeland playing from left to right. Let's go!

1ST MINUTE: Jordie claims the kick-off and is met hard. Beauden's kick is charged, but he does well to clean up and find plenty of space down field.

3RD MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Naholo slips the first tackle to put the All Blacks on the front foot, up to half way but Taylor knocks on before Koroibete sets off on a run down the right wing before being tackled into touch.

5TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Scrum goes straight to deck but the ball's there for Read to play at. All Blacks go left through Goodhue, he fires a long cutout pass to Naholo but it's well forward and we'll come back for a scrum.

7TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Retallick rips the ball away from Tui and the All Blacks turn it over. Beauden spots space and kicks behind the Australian defence before the All Blacks get up to steal the lineout. Beauden again puts boot to ball and finds the touch inside the Wallabies 22m.

9TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Haylett-Petty almost gets around Goodhue but gets the offload away to Maddocks and he's tackled along the sideline. We'll come back for a penalty. All Blacks pinged at the maul before.

11TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Laumape's first touch isn't a great one as he has the ball ripped away from him by Beale and the Wallabies now in possession. Beale tries to find the corner with the kick but it's gone out on the full.

12TH MINUTE (1 MINUTE LATER): Laumape has a second crack from an All Blacks lineout win but is met well by two Wallabies tacklers. Pocock looks to get over him and steal the ball but he's penalised for never releasing.

14TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER), ALL BLACKS TRY - BEAUDEN BARRETT: All Blacks finding space now as Naholo makes good ground down the left wing after a break from Jordie. New Zealand building nicely, putting it through the phases as they approach the 22m. Beauden runs a superb line, gets the ball from Smith and he goes over untouched for the try.

16TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Haylett-Petty looks to run the ball back and splits the All Blacks defence open before offloading to his support player on the inside. Wallabies looking to hit right back but concede the penalty at the breakdown.

18TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Squire gets up to claim the lineout ball as the All Blacks look to drive. They break through Goodhue, but his pass to Beauden is knocked back by the Wallabies and Beale clears.

20TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Wallabies concede another penalty for taking out an All Black without the ball. They were looking promising, inside the NZ 22m but again, discipline proves costly.

22ND MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Taylor lucky to get away with one, was off his feet but Barnes rules he was within his rights to the ball but knocked on.

24TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Pocock manages to secure the ball from a dodgy Wallabies scrum before Maddocks puts the kick in, Koroibete claims it, but his pass is intercepted by Smith before the ABs knock on.
Wallabies piling on the pressure, looking to bash their way over and they get the penalty after Retallick is pinged at the breakdown.

26TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Moody goes straight down at the scrum and the Wallabies opt for another. It's bang in front, but they want more than just three points.

28TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Make that another penalty, this time Franks the guilty party for "lying down" on his face. All Blacks front-row under immense pressure at the moment. Another penalty could be a card.

30TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER), WALLABIES TRY - GENIA: Finally the ball comes for Genia. He attacks the All Blacks defensive line, throws the dummy, puts the head down and gets it down for the try! Great play from the Wallabies halfback.

32ND MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Barrett goes long with the kick-off and it's Hooper who claims it and runs it straight. Foley's back in the pocket and kicks long but it's not out and the All Blacks look to hit right back.

34TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Ben Smith does beautifully to claim the kick on the run before offloading to Read. The ABs number eight tries the grubber but Genia's boot stops it in its tracks before Koroibete comes up with it.

36TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): All Blacks showing plenty of intent on attack, going side-to-side but not making much progress. Rettalick drops the shoulder and rides the tackle but Pocock's right up over him and wins the turnover.

38TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER), ALL BLACKS TRY - BEAUDEN BARRETT: All Blacks turn it over and break out from their own 22m! Taylor and Ben Smith combine nicely down the right wing before Goodhue's tackled just metres out from the try line! They have to score and they do through Beauden Barrett! He crashes over his second.

40TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Jordie thumps the kick down field before Haylett-Petty shows good feet, taking it up to half way. Siren sounds before Hodge is smashed by Squire. Wallabies still with it as Koroibete tries the offload but it's forward and that's halftime.

HALFTIME: ALL BLACKS 14 - 7 WALLABIES

41ST MINUTE: We're back underway and it's Hooper who claims the kick-off before Genia kicks long for Beauden Barrett to run it right back and he's met hard. Barnes pings Alaalatoa for taking a player out without the ball.

44TH MINUTE (3 MINUTES LATER), ALL BLACKS TRY - MOODY: All Blacks forwards looking to bash their over, working their way through the middle, just 10 or so metres out. Moody gets a short ball and powers his way through three players to crash over for the try.

46TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Goodhue slips after taking in the kick-off but does well to find contact and spot the ball. Barrett sees brother, Jordie by himself on the right wing, puts in the cross-field kick but it takes an ugly bounce into touch.

48TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Retallick does brilliantly to disrupt the Wallabies maul and force the error. Smith shapes to put the ball into the scrum but the Australian front-row goes down and are penalised.

50TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER), ALL BLACKS TRY - SQUIRE: All Blacks building steadily, attacking through Jordie Barrett and Cane. Retallick gets the ball, sees Squire surging on his outside, pops the short ball and he's in under the sticks. New Zealand running riot.

52ND MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Maddocks is crunched by Franks but he holds on as the Wallabies go through Genia up the middle. Koroibete puts the head and makes a strong run before Polota-Nau knocks it on. Naholo gets the ball, steps out of one tackle, gives it to Jordie Barrett! He's just got Foley to beat, he looks for the corner but is tackled over the sideline! What an effort from Foley.

54TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Australia right on their own try line, Genia finds Pocock on the charge and he bumps off Cane! The All Blacks openside is slow to get up and he'll have to make way. Nasty collision.

56TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER), WALLABIES TRY - HODGE: Genia goes right from the scrum, he pops it to Foley and he wriggles his way through! He puts the foot down, one to beat in Jordie Barrett, pops it on his inside to Hodge and he dives over for the try!

58TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Jordie shapes to kick, doesn't and is met hard before Smith and Beauden combine nicely. All Blacks playing with the advantage, Pocock turns it over so we'll come back for the penalty.

60TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Both sides finding space but it comes for Laumape before he puts the head down and rides the tackle. ABs kick ahead but Genia does well to clean up before Beale clears it down field.

62ND MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER), ALL BLACKS TRY - BEAUDEN BARRETT: Beauden Barrett gets the ball on the backfoot on halfway, throws the dummy, puts the foot down and he's away! He's got plenty of support, but backs himself and cuts through Genia and the covering Haylett-Petty to score the try. A hat-trick for Barrett. Brilliant.

64TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): All Blacks break out again! This time through Laumape as he beats a couple of would-be tacklers. He's got Perenara inside, looks to pass but the ABs halfback is tackled without the ball and Pocock is penalised.

68TH MINUTE (4 MINUTES LATER): Savea wins the turnover for the All Blacks. New Zealand go wide right and they have a  huge overlap as Retallick gets it, he gives it to Barrett on his outside and he goes over for his fourth try! No! Wait, they've asked the TMO and there was a knock on by Savea in the lead up. No try.

71ST MINUTE (3 MINUTES LATER), ALL BLACKS TRY - BEAUDEN BARRETT: All Blacks turn it over after a promising passage by Australia. McKenzie's in space! He links up with Lienert-Brown, he finds Smith outside him before one final pass to who else?! Beauden Barrett! And the first-five is in in the corner for his fourth try! Incredible.

74TH MINUTE (3 MINUTES LATER): Laumape sets off on a strong charge before Perenara fights his way towards the Wallabies 22m. All Blacks not finished just yet.

77TH MINUTE (3 MINUTES LATER): Hodge charges it up but he's met hard by a wall of All Blacks defence. Australia certainly won't die wondering, playing with plenty of intent but the ABs turn it over.

79TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Laumape attracts plenty of attention, finds Naholo on the left wing and he's away! He steps out of one tackle, before stepping inside the cover defence and he's in for the try. Nevermind. TMO's had a look. Laumape's pass was forward.

80TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Wallabies having one final go as the hooter sounds but Maddocks is tackled over the sideline and that's fulltime! All Blacks retain the Bledisloe Cup.

FULLTIME: ALL BLACKS 40 - 12 WALLABIES

And in other Rugby Championship news such as Argentina pulled off a remarkable win against the Rassie Erasmus coached Springboks in Mendoza.

And finally here is the review for round 2 of the 2018 Mitre 10 Cup season:

Auckland, after years of disappointments in the Mitre 10 Cup Premiership, is sitting at the top of the ladder, unbeaten with Tasman and North Harbour.

Hawke's Bay, by virtue of two bonus points, leads the Championship, sharing the unbeaten status with Bay of Plenty.

Auckland will play Waikato at Eden Park on Thursday while Tasman play North Harbour at Albany on Saturday.

Hawke's Bay have a crossover game at home against Counties Manukau while while Bay of Plenty host Canterbury earlier on Saturday.

Counties Manukau v Bay of Plenty
Making use of applied determination in defence Bay of Plenty rocked home team Counties Manukau with a 22-17 win in Pukekohe. That makes it two Premiership scalps for Bay of Plenty. It was generally expected that first five-eighths Mike Delany would be a key performer for the side, but halfback Richard Judd is right up there with him. His genuine speed and correct decision-making ensures maximum effect is made of the quality ball their pack secures. Counties Manukau has dangerous players with fullback Luteru Laulala a constant threat, but good defence can close down the best and that was the story of the game.

Otago v Hawke's Bay
If anyone doubted Hawke's Bay's aspirations in 2018 they now know that two away bonus point wins over Southland and, on Friday, Otago 31-25, have set them up for a great run at the Championship title. That's especially encouraging given the change in playing personnel for the side this year. Otago didn't sit back however and contributed to what was an entertaining game with memorable skills shown by Vilimoni Koroi and Jona Nareki. That's not to forget the direction provided by first five-eighths Josh Ioane. But successive tries to prop Ben May, wing Mason Emerson and halfback Brad Weber proved sufficient to secure the game for Hawke's Bay.

Taranaki v Manawatu (RS)
Yarrow Stadium might have produced an eerie effect with all those empty stand seats as a result of earthquake dangers but the foundations on the ground were far more sturdy as the Taranaki scrum dominated proceedings. It helped that the Ranfurly Shield was up for grabs because any challenger has to have a share of possession, and the Taranaki denied Manawatu when it mattered most. Making the most of tries either side of halftime, Taranaki put the issue beyond doubt early in the second half and looked far more like the Premiership contender they were last year. Fullback Beaudein Waaka had a fine game all round.

Canterbury v Wellington
Nothing quite exemplifies the Canterbury rugby machine than the effort that goes into turning around a loss like that suffered in the first week against Tasman. This time, against Wellington, the Canterbury desire was evident whereas Wellington threw the ball around with the sort of free abandon that Canterbury cherished, forcing mistakes that allowed them to build more pressure. With centre Braydon Ennor and fullback George Bridge showing their skills, while also giving wing Caleb Makene a chance to show his, Canterbury claimed a 27-20 bonus point win to get their campaign back on track.

Waikato v North Harbour
Waikato will still be wondering how they let this one go when up 21-8 with just under 30 minutes to play, but let it go they did as North Harbour got home 29-28 in Hamilton. A penalty try was a big fillip for North Harbour as they attempted to close the gap while a second try to wing Tevita Li and one to loose forward Murphy Taramai secured what proved the winning advantage. That proved handy when Waikato scored a late try, a bonus point effort, to get within a point but unable to end a five-game losing streak on home soil.

Tasman v Southland
Tasman opted to give their lesser lights a start while Southland looked to lift their game from the doldrums of last year and the result proved an entertaining mix before Tasman claimed a 45-24 win. Fullback Will Jordan picked up two while Solomon Alaimalo again showed his promise on the wing with flanker Ethan Blackadder performing well in the loose. Southland only needed to have better ball retention to have caused Tasman more problems but they deserved full marks for their spirit which, if harnessed correctly, should offer them better results in the near future.

Northland v Auckland
Auckland's strong third quarter paved the way for their 28-12 win in Whangarei which left the home team scoreless in the second half while Auckland added 21 points, 10 of them to wing Melani Nanai and another to New Zealand Sevens wing Salesi Rayasi. That's the best start Auckland has made to the Mitre 10 Cup for several seasons while Northland have lost both their opening games. First five-eighths Harry Plummer made the most of his chance to score a try and add four conversions for Auckland.

2018 Mitre 10 Cup Round 1 review

Did Tasman fire its best shot too early in the Mitre 10 Cup Premiership when poking the Canterbury bear with a 25-17 upset win in Blenheim in the opening round?

That will be the point to watch during the second week of competition as Canterbury face a tough home game against Wellington to regain their kilter. Tasman will have the chance to build on their start when meeting Championship lightweights Southland in Blenheim.

Results from the first weekend were:

North Harbour 21 Northland 20

Northland demonstrated a level of intent that should have made Championship sides sit up and take note when almost pulling off an upset to start the season. However, Shaun Stevenson, filling in at first five-eighths while Bryn Gatland was off for an HIA, and Tevita Li got things moving for the North Harbour. Halfback Jono Kitto looked good for Northland in scoring a try that threatened to steal the game, but Gatland had the final say with a 45m penalty goal.

Tasman 25 Canterbury 17

Beaten finalists in 2017, Tasman turned it on against defending champions Canterbury by making their tackles count and by taking their chances with effect. In spite of their efforts,Tasman led only 10-3 at the break but rattled Canterbury let their discipline slip and with Mitch Hunt calling the shots at first five-eighths, and giving wing Solomon Alaimalo good options, Tasman extended their lead with enough of a buffer to withstand two late tries to hooker Greg Pleasants-Tate.

Manawatu 24 Waikato 19

Starting at a fast rate of knots Waikato led 12-0 in next to no time but defensively Manawatu sorted themselves and finally got on the board just before halftime. Their bench then helped them level the score at 19-19 with 15 minutes left and they secured the match winner courtesy of a fine team try to give themselves a lift before they contemplate a Ranfurly Shield challenge next week.

Auckland 23 Counties Manukau 19

Counties Manukau took Auckland on up front with their pack while the home side looked to their attacking skills through the loose forwards and backs to keep the pressure on and claim a 20-14 halftime lead. Three tries apiece were scored with Auckland's goal-kicking making the difference. It was a measure of the tightness of the contest that Auckland scored only three points in the second half and Counties Manukau a try.

Bay of Plenty 30 Taranaki 10

The last time Bay of Plenty beat Taranaki in Rotorua was before the national provincial championship had started in 1975 and while their last win overall was in 2006 they hit the road running to make the early pace. But while Taranaki struck back immediately, Bay of Plenty tightened up their game and put their tight forwards to use on the break. Sensing they had a chance to pressure Taranaki through the later stages, veteran five-eighths Mike Delany guided them home.

Wellington 34 Otago 16

Back in the premiership Wellington made an outstanding start with Wes Goosen crossing twice in the first 10 minutes, courtesy of some good work by blindside flanker Vaea Fifita. Just as Goosen had earlier, wing Malo Tuitama tied up the effort with two tries in the final quarter. Otago scored only one try, to Kurt Hammer, with Finn Strawbridge's three penalty goals keeping them in touch until the last 20 minutes.

Southland 31 Hawke's Bay 10

Putting their lineout maul into action Hawke's Bay swamped Southland with four converted tries to sign and seal their win and to get a great start to their Championship campaign. Southland, looking to get back on the winner's board after a horrendous season last year without success, showed plenty of spirit but not enough incisiveness to trouble the visitors.

So that is my 220th blog of the year 2018 (MMXVIII) & my 40th of this year.

Rugby Championship round 1 review

Well, the All Blacks (Who were celebrating Sam Whitelock in his 100th test match) put on a masterclass of a performance in the 2nd half as they down the Wallabies 38 - 13 at ANZ Stadium in Sydney during both the opening round of the Rugby Championship for 2018 & the 1st of 3 Bledisloe Cup tests so here's the full match commentary taken from Newshub:

Kia ora, good evening and welcome to our live updates of the All Blacks vs Wallabies encounter from ANZ Stadium, Sydney.

This is the opening game of the 2018 Rugby Championship and, perhaps more importantly, the first of three Bledisloe Cup clashes between the traditional trans-Tasman rivals.

New Zealand has held the trophy since 2003, but the Aussies gave it a good nudge last year, leading until the final moments of the second test in Dunedin and then taking out the 'dead' rubber in Brisbane.

They're way better prepared this year and have champion loose forward David Pocock back on deck, so they present a massive challenge tonight.

The All Blacks will welcome lock Sam Whitelock to the 100-test club, while the other main talking points are the inclusion of Jack Goodhue in the centres and the composition of the back three - Ben Smith at fullback, and Waisake Naholo and Rieko Ioane on the wings.

The Aussies have been rocked by the withdrawal of barnstorming prop Taniela Tupou with a hamstring injury.

Lock Sam Whitelock is leading the All Blacks out onto ANZ Stadium for his 100th test appearance.

The teams are now assembled for the Welcome to Country and national anthems. Finally, the Aussies have found a way to acknowledge their indigenous culture, just like the All Blacks haka.

I know you're all concerned about how the NZ anthem is performed overseason - this version is a good one.

It's the Ka Mate haka, so not the 'We really mean business' version yet.

First minute - All Blacks 0 Wallabies 0

Bernard Foley kicks off for Australia and Marika Koroibete puts a big hit on Rieko Ioane early.

All Blacks win the first penalty, when hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau fails to release in the tackle.

Fourth minute - All Blacks 0 Wallabies 0

Israel Folau gathers a long kick from Beauden Barrett and start to make ground up the left touch, but he's dumped by Waisake Naholo.

Ref Jaco Peyper plays on, but is brought back by his linesman Wayne Barnes to penalist for the dangerous tackle.

Fifth minute - All Blacks 0 Wallabies 0

Brodie Retallick steals the attacking lineout from the Wallabies and Aaron Smith relieves pressure.

From the next lineout, Retallick again spoils possession and forces his rivals into a knock-on.

Seventh minute - All Blacks 0 Wallabies 0

Wallabies are penalised for collapsing a midfield scrum, but they steal the All Blacks lineout and Kurtley Beale makes a long run to set up the attack.

Ninth minute - All Blacks 0 Wallabies 3

All Black skipper Kieran Read is penalised at the breakdown in midfield, about 40 metres out, and Australia strike first, through a Reece Hodge penalty.

11th minute - All Blacks 0 Wallabies 3

Sam Cane charges out of the defensive line to put a big hit on Lukhan Tui, forcing a knock-on and an attacking scrum.

There are initial concerns about Cane, who has a history of concussion, but it's Ryan Crotty that comes out of this exchange the worse. He clashes heads with Jack Goodhue in a tackle - there's no way he can stay on.

Anton Lienert-Brown is already warming up.

20th minute - All Blacks 0 Wallabies 6

Wallabies are hot on attack and probably unlucky to have a clean break by Koroibeti called back for a knock-on that wasn't.

The All Blacks are just hanging on here. Liam Squire concedes a penalty right under the posts and Foley slots it to stretch the lead.

21st minute - All Blacks 0 Wallabies 6

Lienert-Brown is penalised in midfield and you sense that discipline may become an issue for the All Blacks.

Michael Hooper has already been chirping in Peyper's ear, demanding more than just penalties.

24th minute - All Blacks 0 Wallabies 6

Barrett makes a handy dash up the middle of the field, but just can't link with Read.

26th minute - All Blacks 0 Wallabies 6

Aussies are penalised for collapsing their own scrum feed and the All Blacks are on attack. They have a free-kick for numbers in the lineout and then a penalty for collapsing a maul.

Barrett kicks for the attacking lineout, but the Wallabies steal the throw and clear.

29th minute - All Blacks 0 Wallabies 6

The All Blacks mount a promising attack, with Read and Retallick linking, but Naholo is bundled into touch in the corner and the floated pass from Barrett is ruled forward.

Still, the Wallabies feed a scrum just five metres from their line.

33rd minute - All Blacks 0 Wallabies 6

The All Blacks are stringing together phases - 18 of them - but the Wallabies defence is equal to the task, and eventually Polota-Nau snaffles the ball and ends the attack.

34th minute - All Blacks 0 Wallabies 6

Sekope Kepu is off for a head assessment and on comes Kiwi-born rookie Jermaine Ainsley, who was the late pre-match replacement for Taniela Tupou.

37th minute - All Blacks 0 Wallabies 6

Ainsley is welcomed to the field with a big push from the All Blacks that crumbles the Wallabies fowards and wins a penalty. Barrett lines up a kick at goal from midfield, but pulls it wide left.

40th minute - All Blacks 5 Wallabies 6

TRY to Aaron Smith. Ben Smith breaks the tackle from Tui and finds Naholo tip-toing down the left side-line.

He offloads infield to Read and Smith is there to take the final pass. There is some question over the pass, but it stands.

Barrett is wide right with his conversion and Australia lead into the sheds at half-time.

Half-time - All Blacks 5 (Aaron Smith try) Wallabies 6 (Reece Hodge & Bernard Foley penalties)

The Wallabies have done a great job holding the All Blacks to just the one try over the opening 40 minutes. You'd have to say they're worth their lead, but the real question will be can they sustain that level of defence over the closing 40 minutes?

41st minute - All Blacks 5 Wallabies 6

Kepu is back on the park to start the second half.

44th minute - All Blacks 12 Wallabies 6

TRY to Jack Goodhue. Naholo steals the ball off counterpart Koroibete on the right touch-line and it's spun left to Ioane.

He makes good metres, drawing the last of the cover defence to give Goodhue an open run to the line. Barrett converts.

46th minute - All Blacks 12 Wallabies 6

Wallabies try to mount an attack, but Goodhue is enjoying a great few minutes - he cuts Folau down and the move ends.

Damian McKenzie is on for Rieko Ioane, so there will be a reshuffle of the back-line.

47th minute - All Blacks 12 Wallabies 6

Looks like Ioane has a hamstring problem. McKenzie is at fullback and Smith moves to the wing.

48th minute - All Blacks 12 Wallabies 6

The All Blacks are hot on attack, but Foley recovers a loose pass and hares off upfield. Koroibete carries it on, but he's tackled by Barrett and the Wallabies spill the ball forward.

There are some bodies littered back down field though.

51st minute - All Blacks 12 Wallabies 6

Particularly ugly patch of play from the All Blacks and it's eventually called back for a knock-on. There's some doubt over Naholo's strip of Koroibete in that last try, but it's too late to call it back now.

52nd minute - All Blacks 19 Wallabies 6

TRY to Beauden Barrett. The Aussies are attacking, by Dane Haylett-Petty drops the ball and Barret swoops.

He kicks the ball ahead and beats Will Genia for the touchdown, then converts.

Tim Perry is on for Joe Moody at prop.

56th minute - All Blacks 19 Wallabies 6

The Wallabies charge towards the goal-line, but newcomer Jack Maddocks could not unload to find the open man in support and the move is stifled.

58th minute - All Blacks 19 Wallabies 6

Karl Tuinukuafe replaces Owen Franks at prop and Scott Barrett is on for Liam Squire, so he'll fill the blindside flank.

60th minute - All Blacks 19 Wallabies 6

Retallick steals another lineout from the Wallabies and Barrett kicks the All Blacks downfield. Ben Smith picks up the ball and hares off towards the line, but is called back for offside.

From the ensuing penalty and lineout, Whitelock steals the throw-in and the All Blacks are starting to dominate.

64th minute - All Blacks 26 Wallabies 6

TRY to Brodie Retallick. The giant lock snaffles the ball from a breakdown back inside his own 22 and after several phases, he is on the end of a back-line for the try.

He had a man outside him and dummied the pass, before charging the remaining 30 metres. Barrett converts.

Folau is limping down the tunnel with a left ankle problem.

66th minute - All Blacks 26 Wallabies 13

TRY to Jack Maddocks. The All Blacks charge onto attack, with McKenzie, Ben Smith and Barrett making good metres, but Hooper intercepts a pass and the Wallabies break back for the try.

Foley converts and that gives the home team a little sniff.

TJ Perenara is on for Aaron Smith, Nathan Harris for Codie Taylor at hooker.

69th minute - All Blacks 26 Wallabies 13

Beale kicks deep into All Blacks territory and Harris' first lineout throw is deemed crooked, so the Aussies have a great attacking opportunity here.

Ardie Savea replaces Sam Cane.

71st minute - All Blacks 26 Wallabies 13

All Blacks penalised for collapsing a defensive scrum and Foley kicks to touch five metres out.

But NZ holds up the maul and Read comes through the middle to steal the ball.

74th minute - All Blacks 31 Wallabies 13

TRY to Waisake Naholo.

Naholo dives on the ball over the line, after Goodhue intercepts the ball and Barrett finds open spaces with a cross-kick.

Peyper checks for off-side, and it's touch and go, but it's allowed to stand. Barrett misses the conversion.

Aussie skipper Hooper has left the field.

76th minute - All Blacks 38 Wallabies 13

TRY to Naholo. The All Blacks are slinging the ball around and it eventually makes it's way out to Naholo on the left.

He weaves through about four tired Wallabies defenders to score his second in about three minutes. Barrett converts.

80th minute - All Blacks 38 Wallabies 13

Koroibete has a chance to grab a late try for the Wallabies, but his centre-kick is gathered by Nick Phipps and his pass is snaffled by Scott Barrett.

The hooter sounds and that's the end of a very convincing second-half performance from the world champions - one that leaves their rivals with a lot to ponder before the return match at the Eden Park fortress next week.

Full-time - All Blacks 38 (Waisake Naholo 2, Brodie Retallick, Beauden Barrett, Jack Goodhue, Aaron Smith try; Beauden Barrett 4 conversions) Wallabies 13 (Jack Maddocks try; Reece Hodge penalty, Bernard Foley conversion & penalties).

And in other Rugby Championship news such as the Springboks have sold their Argentinian soul to the devil with a thrilling win in Durban.

7:20pm: Well, we're finally here. The 2018 Super Rugby season comes to a close as the Crusaders look to win back-to-back titles with victory over the Lions tonight.

7:22pm: Few giving the Lions chance, but even as a Crusaders fan, you'd surely want a game of it? If the visitors are to get up and cause the upset, it'll no doubt be from the work of Malcolm Marx, the world's best hooker.

7:25pm: Here's also hoping there's little negative stuff to talk about tomorrow and we don't have any cards, or contentious decisions from the officials.

7:30pm: Sold out crowd at AMI Stadium so plenty interest from the locals. Players from both teams cuddling for the last time in the sheds before making their way out.

7:32pm: Weather's absolutely perfect. Whitelock leads the Crusaders out onto the field. Just moments away from kick-off.

1ST MINUTE: We're underway and it's Jantjies who kicks-off for Barrett to take in. Hall fires it to Mo'unga, he hooks his kick and finds touch just outside the 22m.

3RD MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Jantjies tries the cross-field kick, Marx can't hang on and Crotty kicks through for the Lions hooker to dive onto. Barrett makes a good tackle but holds on too long and is penalised.

5TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Lions going backwards, Combrinck cleans up, rights across field and he goes clean through! He beats Mo'unga and is tackled just a metre out. Lions putting it through the phases but the Crusaders defence are up to it. Lions knock on at the ruck.

7TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Both packs struggling to settle for the first scrum of the game and the Lions concede the free-kick. Mo'unga clears up to the Crusaders 10m for a Lions lineout.

9TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Lions playing with plenty of intent, taking the direct approach. Vorster spots space behind the Crusaders defence and Bridge fumbles it into touch for a Lions lineout just 5m out.

11TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Moody made contact with Orie too early at the lineout jump but escapes being penalised and instead the Lions concede the turnover for a Crusaders scrum. Great maul defence from the defending champs.

13TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Hall's kick doesn't find too much distance and the Lions have it once again just outside the Crusaders 22m. Barrett concedes another penalty at the breakdown and Jantjies slots the kick at goal to give the Lions the lead.

15TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Read gets up to win the lineout for the Crusaders and Tamanivalu makes a strong charge up the middle. Vorster attacks the ball at the ruck and concedes the penalty. Looked to have rights to it. Mo'unga kicks the penalty and we're all tied up.

17TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Mo'unga clears down field and Coetzee shows to kick before slipping. Lions still in possession, but Coetzee is penalised for sealing off at the breakdown

19TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Tamanivalu takes it up the middle once again from the lineout win. They go wide through Bridge, he tries stepping in field and putting his head down for the try line but he's tackled into touch.

21ST MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER), CRUSADERS TRY - TAMANIVALU: Bedwell-Curtis is put through half a gap and almost goes through. Crusaders fire it wide to Tamanivalu, he bumps off Combrink, rides the tackle of Mostert and dots down for the game's opening try.

23RD MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Lions looking to attack direct but the Crusaders do well to hold up Vorster and force the maul and then the turnover.

25TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Moody goes down twice and is rightly penalised at the scrum. Combrinck finds touch just five metres out from the try line.

26TH MINUTE (1 MINUTE LATER): Orie gets up to win the lineout and again the Crusaders send their driving maul backwards before conceding the penalty. Jantjies puts it into the corner for another lineout. Lions struggling to get a maul going.

28TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Mostert wins the lineout this time and again make no progress at all with the drive. Dreyer loses the ball forward in contact. So much territory, little to show.

30TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Crusaders manage to get the ball back from the scrum before Mo'unga sends it down field for Coetzee to counter. Janties tries the kick over the top but is marked easily by Mo'unga. Jantjies makes the mistake, takes it back and dots down for a Crusaders scrum 5m out.

32ND MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Lions piling the pressure on at the scrum but it's the visitors who are penalised for "not holding" their weight. Mo'unga slots the easy shot at goal to extend the Crusaders' lead.

35TH MINUTE (3 MINUTES LATER), CRUSADERS TRY - HAVILI: Barrett takes in the Lions' restart and Hall kicks from the base. Jantjies' kick is taken easily by Mo'unga on the run and he's through! He links up with Goodhue and Mapoe makes a great tackle to keep him out. Numbers out wide and Havili's in for the try! Jantjies is just horrific.

37TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Moody is penalised for a neck-roll on Marx and the Lions will have a lineout just 10m out from the try line. They absolutely need to score here.

39TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Lions looking to attack up the middle through their forwards and they have the advantage. They're not making any progress so we'll come back. Todd was offside and Jantjies slots the easy penalty.

40TH MINUTE (1 MINUTE LATER): Skosan shows good feet and bursts into a hole! He steps another but his pass is intercepted and the Crudaders clear down field. Combrick fires a long pass straight into touch. Halftime.

HALFTIME: CRUSADERS 20 - 6 LIONS

41ST MINUTE: We're back underway and it's Mo'unga who kicks-off for Skosan to run it back. Jantjies clears and finds touch on halfway but Havili takes it quickly.

43RD MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Crusaders putting it through the phases, taking it into contact up the middle. Brink is penalised for not rolling away and Mo'unga will have a shot at goal. He lines it up and sends it home to extend the lead.

45TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Jantjies goes long with the restart and Havili takes it in. Read charges up the middle before Mo'unga kicks only as far as the 10m for the Lions to attack.

47TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Lions now putting it through a number of phases, slowly working their way upto the Crusaders 22m and Smith almost goes through but we'll come back for a penalty. Franks was offside.

49TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Lions not learning from previous failings and again their maul is driven backwards. They still have it as Marx makes a strong charge up the middle. Jantjies has a crack, reaches out for the line but he's JUST short. We'll come back for another offside penalty.

50TH MINUTE (1 MINUTE LATER): Lions' scrum send the Crusaders pack marching backwards but concede the penalty for popping up. Little going the way of the visitors.

52ND MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Lions struggling to find gaps in the Crusaders defence but the hosts concede another penalty and Jantjies finds touch inside the 10m. Another maul then?

54TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER), LIONS TRY - BRINK: Brink gets the ball, bumps off Todd, fends off Bedwell-Curtis and races away 20 odd metres to score the Lions' first try. Great piece of individual brilliance. Is there life for the Lions?

56TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Combrinck puts up the bomb and the Crusaders knock on for the Lions to attack through Dyantyi. Whiteley throws a loss pass and it goes into touch and the Crusaders again take it quickly.

58TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Cronje's in a bit of space from the scrum, finds Combrick and he's tackled nicely on right wing. Jantjies tries the cross-field kick and Tamanivalu knocks on before conceding the penalty for holding on.

60TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): The Lions are just 10 points behind and opt for the shot at goal. Interesting, but you have to think the Crusaders will be happy with them doing so. It's a tough kick for Combrinck and he hooks it left.

62ND MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER), CRUSADERS TRY - DRUMMOND: Mo'unga shows nice feet and almost goes through. Crusaders putting it through the phases, taking it up the middle through their forwards. Mo'unga again almost goes through, Todd hits the line, offloads to Taylor and puts Drummond in under the sticks for the try.

64TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Havili takes in Jantjies' kick-off and gives it to Samu to run it back. Crusaders try and go quickly, but Goodhue knocks on for the Lions to now counter. Mapoe frees up Combrinck and he almost goes over in the corner.

66TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Lions doing well to keep possession but the Crusaders defence up to the challenge before they concede the penalty for a dangerous tackle.

68TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER), LIONS TRY - MARX: Lions claim the lineout ball and the Crusaders again defend the maul well before Crotty's shown the yellow card for coming in at the side of the tackle. Lions win the lineout and try the drive, Marx breaks away. Marx gets it again and bashes his way over the try line.

70TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER), CRUSADERS TRY - BARRETT: Dyantyi shows good feet again before the Lions kick upfield for Read to charge it back. Bridge goes cleans through! He links up with Drummond, he fires it to Samu and he's tackled just a couple of metres out. They go quickly to Barrett and he bashes his way over for the try!

72ND MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Read spins out of one tackle before finally being tackled. Crusaders go left to Samu and there's a bit of space for him. Crusaders turn it over but the Lions knock on.

75TH MINUTE (3 MINUTES LATER): Crusaders quite happy to keep ball in hand and play their way out of trouble. Whitelock makes a strong carry as the phase count approaches 13 but concede the penalty for holding on.

77TH MINUTE (2 MINUTES LATER): Read makes a good tackle as the Lions look to make their way into the Crusaders 22m. They go right but are penalised for obstruction.

80TH MINUTE (3 MINUTES LATER): Crusaders looking to close out the game, putting it through a number of phases but they finally concede the penalty for holding on too long. Mostert wins the lineout for the Lions but this time they breakaway from the drive.
Lions struggling to breach the defence as they approach 17 phases now. Todd concedes the penalty and we'll go again. We'll have a lineout. Ball is ripped away and kicked into touch! Fulltime! Crusaders win again!

FULLTIME: CRUSADERS 37 - 18 LIONS
